    Training Games For Fours

Have fun practising with your rink while developing skills

  • Your rink can be developed as a team by practising together, but because practice time is limited, playing against another four is not very productive.
  • The common practice of a roll up where all four stay at the one end, putting down the four bowls at one length does not provide worthwhile practice because it does not simulate a game where your bowls are played alternately and because so often the length is not varied.

  • Here are a set of pairs games which can be played by your four - they give a variety of competitive activities which most bowlers will enjoy playing for an hour or so. In all of them the length of the ends should be varied

    Stop Fault Three Bowl Pairs
  • Skippers and thirds do not like short bowls delivered by leads and seconds
  • Leads and seconds are upset if their own skip or third accidentally moves the jack away from the bowls they have put on the head
  • This game has been remarkably popular whenever I have used it

  • In this simple game of three bowl pairs
  • any bowl delivered by the lead which stops short of the jack is dead
  • any bowl delivered by the skip which crosses the head is dead
  • Scoring - normal bowls

    Scoring Zone Pairs
A good game for team practice for bowlers of any level
  • At each end of the rink set out a rectangular scoring zone 1 metre square or less
  • Use flat plastic markers at least for the front markers
  • Place a half tennis ball at the centre of the zone as the jack
  • Have a mat at each end

  • Scoring is normal plus one point for each bowl which finishes inside the scoring zone

    Knock Bowl Off
  • At each end set up a jack with a target bowl within 10 cms of it and on one side
  • Place a half tennis ball about 1 metre behind the jack ( position can be varied)
  • Each member of the four tries to remove the target bowl from the head or move the jack towards the marker
  • Play as two bowl pairs but replace the target after each bowl
  • Scoring
  • any contact with the target bowl or jack 1 point
  • If the bowl now beats the target bowl or the bowl or jack finishes within a mat length of the marker you score an extra point.

  • Double Target Four Bowl Pairs
  • Place two half tennis ball at each end about 4 metres apart
  • The leads play two bowls at each target, swap over then seconds play two at each (go to longer target first)
  • Score on both heads

    Draw to the Ditch Pairs
  • In each end place the jack within 30 cms of the ditch
  • Play two or three bowl pairs
  • The leads are concentrating on drawing as close as possible. The seconds may be trying to put the jack in the ditch
  • Scoring - normal

    Drive and Draw Pairs
  • Driving means bowling at the maximum speed which the bowler finds comfortable)

  • Set up a target with a jack and two target bowls about three metres from the ditch, and place a half tennis ball marker close to the ditch
  • With their first bowl the leads try to play through the head but keep their bowl on the green and draw to the half tennis ball with their second
  • The skippers drive with the first bowl and draw with the second
  • Scoring one point for a first bowl achieving its aim, normal bowls scoring for bowls to marker
